Digital Art: The Avant Garde Style of Visual Expression

A digital renaissance is blooming across the art community. Decades of technological advancements are rewriting the meaning of art. Both art creators and admirers adore digital fine art around the globe. Yet, this relatively innovative art form is facing resistance from some experts and art critics.

The question ‘Is Digital Art ‘Real’ Art?’ has attracted opinions from diverse people – from traditional artists to 3D artists and computer geeks.

What is Digital Art?

Digital fine art is a visual art form created on computers. Unlike traditional art, virtual art can be replicated any number of times online. It resembles traditional art in terms of artistic expression while imbuing the advancement of creative technology. Some of the most popular digital art forms accepted by consumers are NFT art, 3D art, animations, digital photography, digital drawings, and paintings.

Most Prominent Forms of Digital Fine Art

NFT Art

Standing at the intersection of cryptocurrency and the art world, NFT art has been in high vogue in recent times.  As the name explains, non-fungible tokens are irreplaceable. This means no token is identical to others and is entirely unique.

Virtual outfits, pictures, songs, paintings, and other digital assets are traded on the blockchain. Digital art as NFTs improve reach for artists, bring in more revenue, and expand their creative limits. As only one real NFT exists on Ethereum, NFT artists strongly view their art on equal par with traditional art forms.

Digital Paintings

Paintings created on computers and tablets are called digital paintings. These paintings resemble very much like the traditional ones both in terms of visuals and creation. Many painting creation software provides various brush tools to bring out the authentic feel of fine art.

The Big Debate – Is Digital Art ‘Real’ Art?

While digital art is blooming across the world, critical reviews are increasing as well. Many artistic people argue against the reliability of digital fine art as real art. To support their stance, they emphasize the unlimited replication of virtual art. Additionally, they argue that it is the equipment that creates everything, and not the artist.

On the other hand, digital artists support their art by stating the core meaning of fine art. Similar to traditional artists, they express their visions, dreams, and illusions. The only difference is the medium of expression. Also, they stress the fact that digital art is itself a talent as it takes time and effort to master it.

The debate goes on, but a great majority of the art community supports the notion of digital art being real art. Since the meaning of art remains ambiguous, no one is sure of what the conclusion of the question ‘Is digital art ‘real art’ will be. However, digital art poses a variety of advantages.
